6 Tips to Recover Smoothly from Wisdom Tooth Extraction

How many wisdom teeth do you have? In the 21st century, you shouldn’t have any. Wisdom teeth are vestigial. Meaning, they don’t serve any purpose anymore. However, some people still have them.

Human jaws have gotten smaller over time while the brain has become bigger. As a result, we don’t have the proper space for the wisdom teeth. The lack of space and need usually leads to wisdom teeth problems. They have crooked roots, cause jaw pain, and grow sideways.

Wisdom tooth extraction is among the most common dental procedures. It can go smoothly or may have complications, depending on which problems you experience initially. We asked the top dentists in San Diego to share some tips for smooth recovery after wisdom tooth extraction procedure.

1. Limit Eating And Drinking

For at least two hours after the wisdom tooth extraction, limit eating and drinking. It would be better if you avoid food and drinks altogether. The open wound needs some time to close.

Try to keep anything else out of your mouth, such as gum, toothpicks, cigarettes, and such. Anything foreign inside your mouth can infect the wound.

2. Brush Your Teeth

Just because you’ve had one tooth removed, you can’t forget about the rest. The night after the surgery, you can brush your teeth as usual. Just try to avoid the place of extraction as much as you can.

The first night, consider rinsing your mouth with cooled boiled water instead of doing it with tap water in order to avoid infection. Twelve hours after the surgery, you can use a diluted mouthwash.

3. Get Enough Rest

Even though wisdom tooth extraction is not a major surgery, it can still take a toll on your body. When planning a tooth extraction, make sure you have a day off. It’s recommended to spend the rest of the day in bed.

Even if you have to go to work, try to avoid any physical activities. Allow your body to heal fully. Usually, two to three days after the surgery you can go back to life as usual.

4. Follow A Diet

After the bleeding is over, you have to drink sufficient fluids to keep the body hydrated. Make sure you don’t drink cold or hot drinks at least for one day. Keep the water lukewarm. Avoid drinking from a straw since it can dislodge the blood clot.

Two hours after the surgery, you can start eating soft foods. All the food must be thoroughly cooked and cooled down to the room temperature. Try to abstain from carbonated beverages and sticky foods in order to avoid accidentally removing the blood clot.

5. Take Meds

Your dentist will prescribe certain medications to ease your pain and help you have a smooth recovery. Take them according to the directions. Don’t take painkillers which weren’t prescribed by your doctor. Some meds can induce bleeding and slow down the blood clotting.

If the meds aren’t doing their job and you feel you need stronger painkillers, contact your dentist immediately.

6. Watch For Complications

The majority of patients recover from the wisdom tooth extraction in about 2 to 3 days.  If the tooth problem is severe, it may take up to a week. It’s important to watch your condition closely in order not to miss complications.

Call your dentist if:

  • You have swallowing or breathing problems.
  • The meds aren’t dulling the pain.
  • You have a high fever.
  • The swelling isn’t getting better over time.
  • The wound is bleeding.
  • There is pus coming out of your mouth or nose.

The complications after wisdom tooth extraction are rare. Make sure you follow your dentist’s advice and your recovery will be quick and painless.
